TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY
Typically an in-office minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia, ambulatory phlebectomy removes medium to large-sized varicose veins through tiny incisions in the skin. The veins are teased out through the small holes without causing any major scarring or requiring major surgery, which is a significant advancement from the extensive vein stripping procedures of the past. This differs from other methods of treatment for varicose veins such as laser ablation or radiofrequency procedures in that the diseased vein is removed rather than treated in the leg and left to be absorbed by the body.
During this procedure, Dr. Ruz will mark the affected veins with a marker while the patient is standing up, as veins deflate when the body is in a horizontal position. Once the affected veins have been identified, Dr. Ruz will make small, slit-like incisions in the skin. For larger varicose veins, incisions may need to be slightly larger. Surgical hooks and needles are then used to extract the damaged vein. Incisions are carefully placed and usually result in minimal visible scarring.
Post procedure, a small adhesive dressing is applied over the incision site(s). Compressive bandage is applied to the leg(s).
This procedure is also used with certain other procedures (ie. VenaSeal, Vein Stripping) to obtain maximum result and minimize certain side effect.
BENEFITS & RESULTS
- Offers superior results. Ambulatory phlebectomy results in the complete removal of the diseased vein from the body. This leads to an immediate reduction in symptoms, as well as a quick improvement in the appearance of the individual’s veins.
- Can be used on large veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy is appropriate even when varicose veins are large.
- Small Incisions. When a surgeon performs ambulatory phlebectomy, he or she makes small punctures in the skin near the affected vein. This process leaves you with very small surgical incisions that won’t leave large scars or require intensive post-surgical care.
- Doesn’t require hospitalization or general anesthesia. The procedure can be performed in the comfort of your vein doctor’s office. You won’t need to be hospitalized for the procedure, and you can leave the office shortly after it is complete. Ambulatory phlebectomy can also be performed without the use of general anesthesia.
- Doesn’t require significant downtime. After your ambulatory phlebectomy procedure is complete, you can return to your normal activities quickly without spending time in bed or off your feet.
